Two-point-six-million women are alive today because of yearly mammograms and advances in breast cancer treatment. Director of Womancare at St. Francis Medical Center, Trinka Hileman says that number could be much higher since only 50-percent of women actually go in for the annual checkups! In a continuing effort to bring awareness to this issue Hileman tells KZIM KSIM you will be seeing pink all over Cape Girardeau and the surrounding areas! It is the kick off of PINK UP CAPE! With the theme “Shin a light on breast cancer”. You will see pink ribbons on light posts around town and up and down Normal street on campus. There are also feather banners in businesses supporting the campaign. October is national breast cancer awareness month. You are asked to illuminate your home in some way with pink light bulbs! Hileman says 7-hundred guests, survivors, families and supporters gathered last Wednesday at the cancer institute to benefit DIG FOR LIFE – an ongoing program that raises funds to give free mammograms to poor women in our area. The pink ribbon luncheon has sold out. You can find other area events at dig-for-life-dot-com.
