Illinois eyeing new day care nutrition regulations

Aug 28, 2013 -- 2:22pm

Children in daycares are the focus of a proposal in Illinois.  State officials are considering a series of proposals that'd remove unhealthy snacks and chocolate milk from day cares, while also banning young children from watching television.  Other proposals also mandate children go outside at least twice during the day and forbid day care providers from rewarding children with food for good behavior.  The series of changes were first recommended by the Illinois Early Learning Council. They're being reviewed by a special legislative panel and could take effect in six months.  Illinois Department of Children and Family Services spokesman Dave Clarkin says the proposals are aimed at teaching young children healthy habits. The rules would only apply to day care centers and would affect about 300,000 children.
