The Missouri National Guard will welcome home Soldiers of the 1138th Engineer Company on Sunday. The unit, headquartered in Farmington, deployed 93 Guardsman to conduct route clearance support and missions in Afghanistan. The unit began its year-long deployment process in June 2012, with pre-mobilization training at Camp Clark in Nevada, Mo. After its departure ceremony July 7, the Soldiers continued their mobilization training at Fort Bliss, Texas, before making the journey to Afghanistan. They skillfully executed more than 120 missions, traveled and cleared 25 routes, with 30,000 kilometers traveled and approximately 70 improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, found and disabled. Soldiers are returning in small groups throughout the day, and a formal community welcome home ceremony will honor the unit later this summer.
