Highway workers put their lives on the line every day. They are inches from the danger of vehicles going by at dangerous speeds. Since 2000, 16 MoDOT employees have been killed in the line of duty. Southeast District Construction & Materials EngineerAndy Meyer tells KZIM KSIM that between 2008 and 2012, 61 people were killed and around 3,500 people were injured in Missouri work zones. The top five contributing circumstances for work zone crashes in 2012 were following too closely, inattention, improper lane usage and change, failed to yield, and too fast for conditions. Meyer says your best defense in a work zone crash is a seat belt. In 2012, of the 824 traffic deaths, 614 were people in their cars, and 70.9 percent of them were not wearing a seat belt.
