What do a signed photo of Spencer Tracy and four purple hearts have in common? State Treasurer Clint Zweifel was surprised to find a number of interesting unclaimed properties in the Jefferson City vaults. He put some interesting items on display that were found in the Unclaimed Property Vaults in the basement of the Truman State Office Building. The items included a signed photo of Spencer Tracy, a St. Bernard-shaped nutcracker, and four purple hearts. They are currently being catalogued and will be returned to their legal owners or heirs. Banks in Missouri are required to give safety deposit boxes to the state treasury after five years of no contact with the owners. Zweifel says he receives hundreds of safety deposit boxes, and that the treasury tries to either return the items or auction them off and give the proceeds to the owners or heirs.
