Saint Francis Medical Center is the first in the region to offer the PET F-18 Bone Survey a new standard in bone imaging. The tool is used to capture definition bone images making it easier to accurately detect cancer that has metastasized or spread to the bone. The benefits of this type of scan allows for better imaging and increased clinical accuracy and patient convenience. PET Technician Vincent Glueck tells KZIM-KSIM the process is fairly simple. While the primary purpose is to detect metastatic bone disease they can also differentiate benign from malignant tumors. Patients using this method will also experience less pain and wait less time from injection to scan. The procedure itself only takes 20 minutes compared to an hour for conventional scans. Medicare now covers the procedure as well.
